Eastwoods Pepper Golf day 2017

There was a great turn out for the Eastwoods 20th Anniversary Pepper Charity Golf Day held on 4th October at Ashridge Golf Course.  20 teams lined up for the 9 am shortgun start on a sunny but rather blustery day, which provided an extra challenge for the golfers once things got underway.  There was some excellent, competitive, golf played and for the first time at this event, teams were able to record their scores live on a handset, facilitiated  by Adrian from Golf Score Live, which added a new element to proceedings.  Players had an opportunity to take on two golf pros, Russell Philllips and Trevor Jones, and also had a shot at competing in nearest the the pin and longest drive competitions.  After a morning on the greens, the teams headed back to the clubhouse to take a look at their positiions on the leaderboard before sitting down to a welcome lunch.

Over coffee, and a slice of delicious 20th Anniversary cake, kindly baked and donated by Richard and Caroline Young, Keith Smith of Eastwoods Butchers gave a short speech, thanking everyone for participating and introducing Pepper Trustee Julie Monroe, who added her thanks and outlined the importance of fundraising events like the golf day to the charity.   She then invited Ben Atkins, who had been under the care of the Pepper Nursing team, to share his very personal story with the assembled guests.  Ben shared with everyone present the background to his illness, and how he had been helped through his darkest moments by his family and Pepper Nurse, Terry, and how, with Terry's support and encouragement, and after several rounds of gruelling medical treatment,  he had slowly managed to overcome his illness, and was now in remission and studying at Universary.  Ben emphasised that Terry had not only provided clinical support, but emotional support and hope, something that should never be underestimated in terms of helping someone facing complex health issues.  He felt that without Terry and Pepper's support, he would not be in the position he was today and his future would have looked very different.  Everyone was visibly moved by Ben's story and applauded his bravery in standing up and sharing it.

Keith then led a face paced auction featuring some fantastic prizes, including tickets to West End musical Les Miserables with back stage tour, A wine tasing evening for 15 hosted by radio personality Nigel Barden, a meal for two at contemporary Chinese restaurant Cha Chaan Teng, and tickets for the Saracens Vs Northampton match at Franklin's Gardens.  There was enthusastic bidding throughout and all the auction lots were snapped up in record time.  The generosity of players was overwhelming, and after being invited to sponsor a Pepper Nurse, another £1070 was added to the pot.

Pepper would like to thank everyone that donated an auction or raffle prize, or that provided sponsorship for the event. Without your support, the golf day would not have been a successful as it was. Our thanks also to everyone that took part on the day.   Eastwoods and Pepper were delighted that over £19.600 was raised, the net proceeds from which will allow us to continue helping this vital service to ensure that a child's life can be spent at home and made as comfortable as possible.

Keith Smith and guest Graham Pell handed out prizes to the winning teams, who received individual trophies and money voucher from Eastwoods Butchers, before Keith called on Joe Collier to receive a special plaque to commemorate the 20th Anniversary event  Joe had been involved at the inception of the golf day with Keith, and had been an enthusastic Pepper supporter ever since.  Keith congratulated the winning teams and everyone that had taken part, before bringing the day to a close.

Congratulations to the winning teams:  1st  Astute, 2nd This Year's Winners, 3rd Below Par
