Emotional and psychological support is an integral part of the care offered to patients by the nursing team. Pepper nurses recognise that caring for a child who is ill has an impact on the whole family.
In addition to the care offered to a child the team can provide support to the family alongside the nursing care. This can include pre and post bereavement support for parents which can last for up to three years after the loss of their child.
The Children's Support Facilitator (CSF) can also provide similar support for siblings on a one to one basis, giving them space to express their thoughts, feelings and worries and find ways to cope. This support can be offered in a range of places eg home and school.
The nurses and CSF can also offer advice regarding additional bereavement support groups and services in the area for all members of the family.
