There are over 49,000 babies, children and young people in the UK who live with a life-limiting or life-threatening condition, and the number of referrals are rising year on year.
The Pepper Foundation raises funds for the Rennie Grove Children’s Hospice at Home nursing service. This service offers children living with complex health needs, and their families, face-to-face care, peace of mind, and the option to enjoy the best quality of life possible.
The care provided by the Children’s Hospice at Home service is vital to help support the families who are affected and living with these conditions every day. The nurses working for the children’s hospice at home service that the Pepper Foundation funds, need to visit patients every day.
With the cost of living rising, a real strain is being put on small charities, especially those that have a need to travel. The cost of fuel has risen by 12% since the beginning of 2022; this has increased the cost for the nursing team to visit families. Last year the nursing team drove over 22,313 miles (that’s almost once around the earth); as we move beyond the pandemic, the nursing team will be making more and more trips to see patients. In fact, during April the nursing team did 80 patient visits, which is an increase from this time last year.
Each child has complex needs unique to them; the children and their families depend upon the nurses’ ability to travel to their home to administer care that they urgently need, day or night.
How does the Children’s Hospice at Home Help Families?
The Children’s Hospice at Home service helps to care for children like James and his family. You can read about their story here.
So, how can you help?
We are asking our supporters to sponsor the nursing team’s mileage, with the hope of reaching a target of sponsoring 20,000 miles (£10,000). So one way would be to fund a trip to visit a patient: 30-mile trip = £15.
Another way would be to pay for a tank of fuel. A tank of fuel = £50
Or maybe you’d prefer to walk a mile in the nursing team’s shoes and raise money with a sponsored walk, cycle, or run. Find out how by visiting our fundraising page.
However you might choose to support The Pepper Foundation, we are grateful for our supporters as we simply couldn’t continue to fund this service without you!
